Hollywood Waging An Ongoing War Against Internet

Hollywood Waging An Ongoing War Against InternetAs the Dark Knight hits theaters, please read on for a sordid tale about life and business in Gotham and Washington, DC...

Hollywood is waging an ongoing war against the Internet by pushing bills like SOPA and encouraging the Department of Justice to shut down websites -- and even imprison people -- just for aggregating links to sites that the movie industry doesn't like.

Hollywood spends millions of dollars trying to buy off politicians.  They've even repeatedly let Senator Patrick Leahy -- the sponsor of the Senate version of SOPA (called PIPA) and the chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over most bills that Hollywood cares about -- appear in their summer blockbusters.  He's in the Dark Knight Rises, and was also in the last Batman movie.

Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia Founder Asking To Stand For Richard O'Dwyer & Internet Freedom
Text | Social Stuff

I am Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and if you care about justice and the future of the Internet freedom, Demand Progress and I need your help.

This will only take a few seconds, but you can really help us change things for the better.
Richard O'Dwyer is a 24 year old British student at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. He is facing extradition to the USA and up to ten years in prison, for creating a website – – which linked (similarly to a search-engine) to places to watch TV and movies online.
O'Dwyer is not a US citizen, he's lived in the UK all his life, his site was not hosted there, and most of his users were not from the US. America is trying to prosecute a UK citizen for an alleged crime which took place on UK soil.
The Internet as a whole must not tolerate censorship in response to mere allegations of copyright infringement. As citizens we must stand up for our rights online.

Every day, tens of millions of people will swipe the screens of their iPhones to unlock them.

On the other side of the world, a young girl is also swiping those screens.

Six days a week, twelve-plus hours a day, she repetitively swipes tens of thousands of them. She spends those hours inhaling chemicals that are never disclosed to her. For her labor, she makes less than $17 a day, is forced to work unpaid overtime, and, when her supervisors want to punish her, she is humiliated and forced to clean toilets.
